On Jan. 15, 1960, Chrysler announced the "sixth in a famous line," the 300F. In fact this F seems to reawaken the fierce image of the first Letter Cars, built for performance rather than for parading. One may judge by horsepower and see that the 413-cu.in. engine delivers 375 hp – less than its immediate predecessor! But there’s a real difference. The two carburetors now supply their fuel-air mixture through odd-looking intake manifolds that virtually conceal the motor, so long that the carb for the left bank of cylinders sits on the right side! This system, called "Ram Induction," amounts to a tuned passage that acts like a turbocharger. As soon as one gets up to a certain rpm level, depending on the length of the intake "rams,"300f-2.jpg (19321 octets) acceleration  is like a kick in the rear, with 492 ft.lb. of torque behind it. Even more, a "performance package" is offered, with inexpert drivers prudently warned away from it. It consists of an engine pushed to 400 hp, and a four-speed Pont-à-Mousson manual transmission from France’s big Facel-Vega models. The Ram system in these 400-hp engines is designed to reach its maximum torque at much higher rpm’s. The internal length of the 400-hp Ram passage is 15 in., compared with 30 in. in the standard engine. See "to know more" below.

The body, now a welded monocoque unit, is much altered in appearance, with a trapezoidal grille and fabulous sloping tailfins, ending in boomerang-like tail lights. The trunk lid is decorated Imperial-style with a false spare-wheel cover. Seating is for only four, with bucket seats divided by a console that runs all the way from front to back. Surprisingly, a tachometer is supplied, but in a position where the driver can hardly see it. The "AstraDome" dashboard is truly extraordinary, a glass bubble in which the instruments float, illuminated by avant-garde electrical luminescence.

convertible adAs to performance, the F traveled to Daytona and pulverized the times established in 1956 by a 300B. G. Ziegler maintained 144.927 mph for the flying mile, followed close by B. Shaw, H. Faubel and others, all driving 300F’s. Motor Life tested one of the 400-hp models in June 1960, recording 0 to 30 mph in 3.7 seconds, 0 to 60 mph  in 7.2 seconds. A. Granatelli, driving a blown 300F, was timed at 171 mph at Daytona and 184 mph at Bonneville.

This explains the current price of a 300F, highest of all the Letter Cars. Only 9 or 10 of the 400-hp models were produced, one of them a convertible – so to buy one of them you need to sell both your 1959 Eldorados.
